angry doc is so dumb...

... they have to tell him which side of the BP cuff to place against the patient.

  • Hehehe... but have you seen some doctors try to take a blood pressure? When I went through medical school it was something the examiners made students do during the exams just they could see if we'd ever done it before. Thanks for your blog, keep up the great work!

  • *sheepishly* Once as a baby med student, my Angry Consultant ordered me to take a patient's BP and true to form, I didn't know which side went on where.

The "artery" arrow totally saved my ass.

  • OK... just let me know the next time you guys set a claymore mine so I know to get out f the way.

I've actually got classmates who started the first day of work not knowing how to place the leads to do an ECG/EKG.

  • I've been told of one of my classmates who, as a houseman, had to position the cuff about 3 times before she got it right.

Very few people take manual BP anymore unfortunately. Even my housemen would tell me "the patient's BP is 75/40" and then say they didn't take a manual one (in a "why the hell do I need to take a manual BP" tone) when I ask them.

  • I once told a houseman to stop using a BP machine and switch to manual because the readings were obviously off.

Houseman: Can't I just use the machine first and only use manual if the reading is abnormal?

No, moron. Because when the machine is wonky, a 'normal' result means the patient's BP is actually abnormal. Didn't they ever teach you the concept of systemic error?
