Warning - Smoking may cause dyscalculia

angry doc: Do you smoke?

Patient: Ya. Actually I managed to stop for two months while I was on this medicine from my GP, but then I stopped the medicine and started smoking again.

angry doc: Why? Wasn't the medicine effective?

Patient: It was, but it was expensive.

angry doc: How much did it cost you each month?

Patient: Hundred-over dollars.

angry doc: How much do you smoke a day?

Patient: One pack a day.

angry doc: How much is a pack these days?

Patient: About ten dollars.

angry doc: ... so how long have you had difficulty doing sums?

  • Again that generous dose of observation on the foibles of the patient.

What is the moral of this little ditty?

That your patients cannot even count?

  • No, I think the real issue is what disadvantages and dangers do we place on smoking as a habit?

Is it just a cost drain in money terms? (In this case, spending $10 A DAY on cigarettes versus $100+ A MONTH on drugs to stop smoking)

What about the health advantages and reduction in health risks that come with smoking cessation? What value do we place on it? No value? Priceless?

But these examples are real. Just because Angry doc writes about them does not make him the bad guy. In fact he is just sharing a story. How one chooses to react to these anecdotes is a reflection of their inner thoughts.

  • OZ,

Are you a clairvoyant with telepathy powers?

Only the HeShe knows what message HeShe wants to convey.

    And HeShe ain't talking.

I received training at the Xavier Institute at Greymalkin Lane.
