Layman's Guide to Medical Equipment 5

Tongue Depressor

This is not a giant ice-cream stick - it is a tongue depressor.

I use it when your tongue is too happy and you are talking too much.

  • Ooo! this one I use to paint small soldiers.

  • I realised that a good way to "shut up" a patient who is babbling way too much irrelevant and inconsequential questions/nonsense is to put into their mouth a thermometer.

Usually gets them quiet. And then I can either auscultate their chests in peace or write up my notes. After which the thermometer comes out and off they go!

  • So why do you gag me with it?

It also makes a fine paint stirrer.

  • OK, I also throw them at medical students who fail to answer my questions correctly... but hey, I used to use the tuning fork.
