Quote of the Week 2

"Religiously informed values, on the other hand, do not shift with the mood prevailing in society, at least in theory. This is the positive contribution which religious conviction can bring to the debate and formulation of policies and laws."

- Mr Melvyn Lim, on why "religiously-informed" values are superior to secular values.

  • Oxymoron of the day - "Religiously informed"

It's amazing what one can do with subtle play with words. Reason/facts/logic becomes secular values which is then mutated to become seclular "beliefs".

  • "The death penalty or castration would be highly effective in deterring rapists from re-offending. However, many of us would hesitate to prescribe such severe penalties for rapists. A clinical examination of scientific or economic facts alone does not determine law or policy."

Is Mr. Melvyn Lim saying that he knows scientists, sociologists and economists who advocate the death penalty/castration as the best punishment for rapists?

Or is he just making stuff up to misdirect the reader?

Of course, there are people who advocate the execution of rapists and they aren't secularists...

"Religiously informed values, on the other hand, do not shift with the mood prevailing in society, at least in theory."

This is patently false, unless Mr. Melvyn Lim prefers the return to such "unchanging" religious values - eg. slavery, punishment for people who work on Sundays, who eat shellfish or disrespect their parents.

"This is the positive contribution which religious conviction can bring to the debate and formulation of policies and laws."

Why is it a "positive" contribution as long as the value is unchanging? If societal benefit is not an important factor, then how is the "positive" contribution defined?
