I realised that a good way to "shut up" a patient who is babbling way too much irrelevant and inconsequential questions/nonsense is to put into their mouth a thermometer.
Usually gets them quiet. And then I can either auscultate their chests in peace or write up my notes. After which the thermometer comes out and off they go!

OK, I also throw them at medical students who fail to answer my questions correctly... but hey, I used to use the tuning fork.
