Overheard…
... in the operating theatre tea-room.
Medical Officer: … so I referred the patient to Medical, and it turns out the registrar on-call was my ex-houseman! I feel so old.
Registrar: You think that’s old? The student-nurse that I met during my housemanship is now a Nursing Officer!
Senior Registrar: You think that’s old? My ex-houseman is now my consultant!
All three: *sigh!*

Don't promotions go by seniority and experience?

Thankfully/regrettably, no.
Promotion to the next grade is dependent on attaining a series of milestones in the forms of exams.
Pay rise used to be pegged to seniority, but is now pegged to both length of service and performace, I believe.

Or worse: houseman gets so discouraged from being tekan'd by you he decided to quit clinical medicine and later becomes a hospital administrator... in YOUR hospital!

I guess AST and BSTs are offered based on performance too? But 'performance' can be hard to define is'nt it

at least better than having a non-medical person be the hospital administrator.

You missed out the male-female setup, which accounts for many of these 'reg-MO' experiences.

Heheh.
What I like about these 'Overheard' posts is that the brevity means not much background information is given, and readers make their own interpretation based on how much they know.
I'm constantly surprised by how much of the undertone readers can pick up. :)
